Easter in isolation

Easter is on the way and it may look a little different this year, but we can still make it a good one! The current crisis is most definitely affecting everyone. So, it is important to stay focused on good things and getting through it together. 

Many of us, if not all of us are experiencing some form of stress relating to the way the crisis has impacted our lives. It’s important to keep a currency of kindness going! One small act of kindness could mean the world to someone.  

Some are struggling with keeping themselves or their family fed, or maybe they’re juggling tasks with the kids at home. Many kids are probably feeling pretty confused and possibly struggling without seeing their friends. The elderly have been extremely isolated and are most likely lonely. Some people’s homes may not feel that safe and others may not have a home. Mental health and self-resilience may be testing us too.   

That all sounds a little heavy, but we will get through this together! Since the world has somehow come to a stop. It is a time for reflection and many positive things have come to light.  

Use this time to check-up on family and friends. Get to know the people around you, as well as yourself!

Who’s around you? 

Who are your family and friends? How are they going today, have you asked them? Who are your neighbours? Have you met them?  

Now is the time to form bonds with the people in your life. Isolation is forcing us to slow down, so take it as an opportunity to spend time with loved ones. Call an old friend and catch up! Do you know the stories of your grandparents’ lives? Why not call them and ask them to share it with you.  

Isolation but still community: 

A letter was left under my family’s door a few days ago. On it was the phone-number of our neighbour. She had created a WhatsApp group for the entire street to join!  

Now 5pm is happy hour on our street! Anyone up for an evening drink is welcome to come out and hang-out from their front yard. Through this group we’re able to have a little fun but also stay connected. If someone needs a hand they’ve got the entire street to help them.  

We’ve also now met the people we’ve lived beside for years but had remained strangers to until now. How could you bring your neighbours together? 

Artists’ community: 

Lots of musicians have been doing live shows from their homes to keep some positivity rolling and music playing. Look up the artists you like on Youtube or social media and support artists whilst also bringing music into your home. 

Keeping away hunger: 

Organisations like Foodbank are doing excellent work in helping Australian families to stay fed. A great way to help out is to support causes like this, but there are many ways you can support your community. Why not offer to pick-up groceries for someone who can’t? Or why not share recipes with people who might need a little hand in the kitchen? 

How to keep the kids busy 

You love them dearly, but are they driving you mad yet? The kids are cooped up in the house and probably full of beans. They’re also missing a bit of school time and if you’ve got your hands full it may be tricky to keep them occupied and still learning.  

A few ideas and some from Forbes list of 101+ are: 

  • An Easter egg hunt – it may have to just be in the house but the hunt for chocolate is sure to keep them occupied 
  • Make a daily schedule or calendar – in some time slots allow them to choose what is done, so when it’s your turn to choose they’ll respect it more (so you can finally get a few things done) 
  • Get creative – get grubby and paint a picture, or draw with something a little less messy 
  • Do some cooking – keep them busy and fed  
  • Read books or create puzzles 
  • View books read aloud by astronauts in space! 
  • Teach them how to grow something in the garden 

What is it they’re interested in? Why not dare them to a challenge! Think of something they like and something they wish to achieve. What’s a way they can work on it and achieve a milestone goal? 

If the only thing that works is a little hand from the tv, there are lots of educational programs on Netflix.  

What improvements could you make? 

Everything has slowed down, stopped or changed. Why not use it as a time to reflect and improve on your life and yourself?  

Think about your home. Does it feel like home? At the moment we’re all forced to spend a lot of time there. If you’re feeling comfortable then it probably does, but if you’re not, well maybe it could do with a few changes. If it feels cluttered, why not go through your belongings and find what you really need? You might just stumble across a few old things and enjoy a trip down memory lane.  

If it feels empty, how could you fill it? If it feels plain, what could give it colour?  

What about the people you live with? Do you get on well with them and how close are you? Our lives are often a busy blur, passed by days and nights focused on achieving. Sometimes we get too caught up in moving and what will be, that we forget what already is.  

If you’re stuck in a home with people that you aren’t getting along with, how can you use this time to improve these relationships?  

Maybe you live alone. Who are you talking to then, and who do you wish you were? Why not reach out and start new conversations. Talk to someone you haven’t in a while, or maybe you’ve always wanted to talk to. Why not video call the ones you miss for a morning coffee or a meal?  

Or are you driving yourself mad? Spending more time alone in this period of isolation might make us all think a lot more about ourselves. Why not take it as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and improve the things you want to work on? 

What’s your isolation resolution? 

Since you might have some spare time on your hands why not get creative? What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but never got around to?  

Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to paint, or play an instrument, or to speak another language. You could take the time to write or to read books that are getting dusty on your shelf. Now could also be the time to find new music.  

There are plenty of flavours to explore in meals to cook, and to eat. If you’ve been meaning to eat a little healthier you could take the time to learn some healthy recipes. Or if you’d like to work on fitness but haven’t had the time, go for a run or try a home workout.  

Is the garden looking a little neglected? Spending a lot of time looking at walls might make us all a little claustrophobic. Spending time in the garden will help pass the time but is also beneficial for mental and physical health.  

There are many things to try and do. Today we are lucky to have the internet which has an abundance of recipes, workouts, e-books, tutorial videos and online classes. It’s a strange time we’re living in. Things may feel frightening or distressing as we face the unknown, but in all the madness there is reassurance. In an unexpected crisis people have come together. This time of things slowing down is also bringing good things. The silencing of our busy lives is clearing up nature in some areas, and so we can also use it to clear up our own lives and minds too.  

However you spend this time do it with kindness and have a wonderful Easter!
